Gears of War Judgment Thoughts

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 29, 2013, 3:50 PM

Nearly at the end of Gears of war Judgment, having a ton of fun with it so far. It was interesting seeing more vivid color brought into the backgrounds. I know that a lot of people were irritated with this in the previous games. Saying that its an entire world of grey, brown and dirt. Sure, it was. But given the situation; the bombings, fallen cities, pollution, weapons, reavers etc. I think its pretty accurate. I liked the mood of the prior games, it did its job (Fallout 3 was no different.) There WAS variations in the scenery, from what I remember the locust caves were full of blue/white glowing plants and the riftworms body was...well...bursting with color. ohoho.

Still, I think Judgment worked to give those unsatisfied fans the color and life they wanted while still showing how the world LOOKED before everything went to hell. The lighting in the game was just gorgeous, I had to stop and just look around in between the droves of locusts. I'll probably take my time even more the next play through to just appreciate the art of the game. I've always marveled at the texture work in GOW, nothing is left solid. The marble texture in one of the parks (I forget its name) was gorgeous, even the bullet holes were detailed out. I especially appreciated what they did with the skies! The ink blobs made everything look so surreal, like a twisted aurora borealis.

I really enjoyed the new weapons as well, the Markza is now the love of my life.
Is it just me or does the one-shot handle a lot better now? It seemed a lot more fun to use in this game, though, I'm so used to getting mutilated by it in GOW 3 multiplayer
.___.

Paduk and Sofia could have been fleshed out a bit more. While I enjoyed Paduk's delicious accent and remarks he didn't stand out as much as I think he could. I loved his design, would have enjoyed just a bit more inner convo with the crew that would indulge the player in more of his character/past. Sofia got in a bit of backstory, but I don't think it was very positive. "YOU GUYS WERE REEAALLLY CLOSE." Like a bunch of little boys egging on a girl to spill her sex stories or something. Also, I hated that she didn't seem capable of opening a single door by herself. Bitch, ram yourself into that door! Cut those chains! I remember in GOW 3 Anya and Sam did everything that the others did. I guess Sofia was too busy doing squats to have time to build and upper body strength.
Baird was quieter than I thought he'd be. The way he was written in the books made him out to be WAY more of an asshole than he was in judgment. Maybe he was toned down for relate-ability? Though...commander Shepard (mass effect) was a HUGE DICK FACE and that seemed to work out just fine.
On the topic of characters it seemed like the Locusts spoke a LOT LESS english. They used to converse a lot more in the background, laugh after killing you and shout commands. Maybe back then (in the games timeline) they knew less and learned more as time went by? Myrrah spoke english, I can only assume that the locusts would be bilingual for strategy purpose (if overhearing humans plans/getting intel etc.)

As for the story/pacing I enjoyed the interactive story telling. I do wish there was a bit more exploration or unusual tasks to be done. The prior games had you riding reavers, inside a giant worms body running from poo, underground feeding a rockworm, kicking ass as a brumak etc. Judgment seemed a bit uncreative as far as what you got to do. Mainly just explorations of houses/towns etc. I suppose I should expect that though, considering the story. This is before the humans really know much about the locusts and their homeworld so you cant really expect much for exploration. Maybe having more vehicle play? (although the vehicles handled like a bar of soap on water in your bathtub.)

As a whole I have been having a lot of fun with campaign and I know I will love horde, I always do. The world of gears is up on the top of my list so seeing any slice of that story told/played out is exciting to me. I can't wait for new action figures! HGNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN HAVE NO MONEY EVER.

I love art, love fashion...love anything that fosters my creative side.
I've been drawing since I can remember but decided "IMA BE AN ARTIST" when I was about 12-13. I started out drawing sonic and knuckles until I got my first american comic, witchblade. I later found Fathom and other american art goodies. My artwork began to have a very strong comic influence until I stumbled onto anime. The good old generics, the kind that only a small town would carry. DBZ, Escaflowne, Slayers. I later delved into Obari's works which had a great influence on my style.

Nowadays I'm looking to achieve stylistic works, exaggerated. I love when a picture can feel so fast, strong or just have a ton of motion. I want to be able to capture that in my work. Along with a side of sexy and fun character design. I strive to incorporate detail like that of Joe Mad.

Anyways, I'm always happy to hear from anyone that just wants to talk. I really appreciate all the support I've been given over the last 8 years on DA. You've all helped me grow in so many ways. I appreciate it <3 Love you guys so much.
